- WORKSHOP ON CONCURRENCY AND OBJECT ORIENTATION
-
- to be held at TOOLS EUROPE '93, Versailles
- Tuesday, March 9, 1993, 14:00 - 18:00
- Chair: Peter Lohr, Freie Universitaet Berlin

- Past workshops on object-oriented concurrency have mainly dealt
- with concurrent OO programming languages. Language issues are
- still important (e.g., concurrency and inheritance, types of ac-
- tive objects, etc.). This workshop, however, is intended to ad-
- dress a broader spectrum of issues. Contributions to any aspect
- of concurrent OO systems development are invited. The following
- topics might be of particular interest:
-
- Analysis and design: How should we model concurrent OO sys-
- tems? How can we distinguish between implementation-related
- and implementation-independent concurrency concepts? What is
- the interplay between concurrency and inheritance on the
- design level? How can we formally specify concurrent OO
- designs?
-
- Parallel programming: "Parallel programming" means concurrent
- programming for parallel architectures, with a considerable
- speed-up in mind. Can object-orientation, in particular in-
- heritance, contribute anything at all here? Can inheritance
- be employed to improve portability between different architec-
- tures?
-
- Experience reports: A wealth of concurrent OO languages has
- been suggested, many of them have been implemented, few have
- been used extensively. What are the experiences in solving
- real-life problems and what conclusions can be drawn for pro-
- gramming methodology and language design? Are the programs
- efficient? Can anybody report on case studies for comparative
- analysis of different languages?
-
- Note that this conference also hosts a workshop (#1) entitled
- "Distributed Objects". That workshop focuses on object-based
- language design and distribution; this one takes inheritance into
- account and assumes complete distribution transparency. The
- overlapping should be minimal. If in doubt where to submit your
- contribution, ask one of the chairmen.
-
- The workshop is open to all specialists in the field. Attendance
- is by invitation only. Rather than a succession of formal
- presentations, the workshop will be an opportunity for discussion
- and interaction among the participants.
-
- Invitations will be sent on the basis of position papers, to be
- received before
-
- January 31, 1993

- Position papers must be 1 to 5 pages long and describe the key
- ideas of the author's work. They must indicate the author's name,
- address, telephone, fax and e-mail. They must be in camera-ready
- copy form, suitable for direct reproduction and distribution to
- the workshop participants. Please submit your contribution both
- in paper form and in Postscript format by e-mail. Authors of ac-
- cepted position papers will be notified by February 15, 1993.
- There will be advance access to the accepted position papers via
- anonymous ftp.
-
- Participation in the workshop includes lunch and a copy of the
- position papers. Participation is free to participants re-
- gistered for the TOOLS conference; the price for others is 500
- French Francs covering expenses.
-
- For any further information about the workshop please con-
- tact the workshop organizer at the above address. For
- information on the TOOLS conference and tutorials, or to obtain
- a registration form (paper or e-mail), please contact the TOOLS
