- We have a study group that has been meeting once a week for the
- past couple of months with the hopes of becoming C++ gurus.
- During this time, we have come to the conclusion that Lippman's
- 'C++ Primer' (which we have been using up until now because there
- were enough copies around the department to keep us from going
- out and buying another text) is less than adequate. It has
- served as a decent starting point, but is in no way comprehensive.
- The second edition is somewhat better, but we feel that a different
- text from a different author would be a more worthwhile investment
- (considering the second edition will contain mostly what we have
- already seen with a little bit more).
-
- What we would like are YOUR opinions on texts that you have used/read.
-
- Our only basic requirements include coverage of C++ version 3.0
- (through templates and exception handling) and some measure of
- completeness, since most texts seem to cover some things well, yet
- leave others untouched.
-
- The texts that we have researched and aren't impressed with
- are as follows:
- Lippman's, C++ Primer (1st and 2nd editions)
- Stroustrup, ARM (covers version 2.1, but no I/O)
- Eckel, Using C++ (covers version 2.1)
- Herbert/Schildt, C++ The Complete Reference (covers version 2.1)
- Barkakati, OOP in C++ (covers version 2.1)
- Dewhurst/Stark, Programming in C++
-
- Also, we are wondering if anyone has a text that covers C++ I/O
- in its entirety. So far all texts either don't cover it, or
- only cover parts.
-
- Thanks.
