  11. We have a study group that has been meeting once a week for the
  12. past couple of months with the hopes of becoming C++ gurus.  
  13. During this time, we have come to the conclusion that Lippman's
  14. 'C++ Primer' (which we have been using up until now because there
  15. were enough copies around the department to keep us from going 
  16. out and buying another text) is less than adequate.  It has 
  17. served as a decent starting point, but is in no way comprehensive.  
  18. The second edition is somewhat better, but we feel that a different
  19. text from a different author would be a more worthwhile investment
  20. (considering the second edition will contain mostly what we have 
  21. already seen with a little bit more).

  23. What we would like are YOUR opinions on texts that you have used/read.
  24.  
  25. Our only basic requirements include coverage of C++ version 3.0 
  26. (through templates and exception handling) and some measure of 
  27. completeness, since most texts seem to cover some things well, yet
  28. leave others untouched.

  30. The texts that we have researched and aren't impressed with
  31. are as follows:
  32.     Lippman's, C++ Primer (1st and 2nd editions)
  33.     Stroustrup, ARM (covers version 2.1, but no I/O)
  34.     Eckel, Using C++ (covers version 2.1)
  35.     Herbert/Schildt, C++ The Complete Reference (covers version 2.1)
  36.     Barkakati, OOP in C++ (covers version 2.1)
  37.     Dewhurst/Stark, Programming in C++
  38.  
  39. Also, we are wondering if anyone has a text that covers C++ I/O
  40. in its entirety.  So far all texts either don't cover it, or 
  41. only cover parts.
