  17.             THE AAAI-93 WORKSHOP ON AI IN COLLABORATIVE DESIGN

  22. Design is recognised as being among the most complex of the intelligent 
  23. human endeavors. AI in design has helped to develop renewed interest
  24. in design research and design computing by providing a symbolic
  25. approach to modeling complex recognition and decision making. Until
  26. recently, most AI in design research considered design as an activity
  27. carried out by a single person and provided support tools for the
  28. individual. Design, today, is rarely carried out by an individual working
  29. alone, but by individuals or groups working collaboratively. AI addresses
  30. models of problem solving for both individual and multi-agent activities,
  31. and consequently has the potential to shape this developing field.

  33. This workshop is of particular interest at this time because there is an
  34. increasing focus on the use of AI in design environments but a lack of 
  35. comprehensive models for collaborative design. AI provides representation
  36. and reasoning paradigms which have extended the use of computers in design
  37. beyond graphical CAD and numerical analysis towards knowledge-based
  38. systems. Current developments in collaborative design focus on
  39. communication among individuals or processes across multiple domains,
  40. where collaboration can occur among homogeneous or heterogeneuos design
  41. views. Where AI-based design process models address an individual's
  42. multiple views, AI-based collaborative design must focus on merging and
  43. communication multiple views across multiple individuals.

  45. The organisers of this workshop provide two distinct perspectives on the
  46. topic of AI in collaborative design. One perspective is to view it as an
  47. AI problem, the other is to view it as a design problem. This workshop
  48. will bring together AI researchers and professionals interested in
  49. design problem solving and design researchers and professionals who 
  50. use AI techniques.

  55. The main objectives of this workshop are to provide a forum for
  56. researchers and practitioners in the field of artificial intelligence in
  57. collaborative design, to discuss state-of-the-art experimental research,
  58. and to set a new agenda for future research and development in the
  59. field.

  64. The workshop will focus on the following issues:
  65. * DAI in collaborative design
  66. * languages for communication and cooperation
  67. * representation and communication of design intent
  68. * intelligent user interfaces for groupwork
  69. * intelligent synchronous multimedia interaction
  70. * models for developing groupware
  71. * symbolic approaches to visual reasoning
  72. * recognition of emergence of new properties
  73.  
  74. Format of the Workshop

  77. The workshop is designed to have a round-table format. Up to four
  78. presentations selected from the submitted papers will be given. The
  79. presentations will act as catalysts for discussion.

  85. papers. The number of attendees will be limited.
