- In the January 1993 issue of BOARDWATCH magazine, there is an
- ad for Fracterm BBS front-end software. Its claim to fame is
- that is supports fractal image compression, and you can download
- and display an svga image in 10-15 seconds, as a function of the
- front end software. This allows you to browse GIFs visually online,
- and select your downloads from the images themselves, not just
- text descriptions.
-
- IMHO, fractal compression blows away JPEG in every aspect. Even at
- it's most lossy, a fractally compressed images takes on a 'water color'
- look. Jpeg simply gets less and less recognizable. Also, JPEG is a
- relatively mature (read, maxxed out) technology, whereas Fractal
- compression has yet to reach it's potential.
-
- One of the amazing aspects of fractal compression is that the
- decompression is resolution independant. A 100x100 gif can be
- displayed at 320x200 without pixelization (blockiness).
-
- Anyway...you can check out FRACTERM at 604-734-5800 USR DS,
- or voice 800-676-3111. I am in no way connected with Fracterm.
-
- Although I thought the current incarnation of Fracterm was a little
- lacking in functionality (as far as a BBS front end goes), I can see
- it's potential, and I really hope it's fractal based technology
- catches on.
-
- Have fun!
