- | Following the successful pattern of the SIGGRAPH '91 panels transcripts,
- | we plan to make the contents available in several formats. Articles may
- | include text, monochrome or color figures, or additional material if it can
- | be used on a wide range of platforms). In the ftp area, text will be
- | provided in plain ASCII, rtf (rich text format), and PostScript formats,
- | and images will be provided in tiff format and possibly other formats.
- | Versions for e-mail will be in a subset of these formats, with images
- | converted to ASCII formats as far as possible to allow e-mail access.
-
- This is a good example when GIF may be better than JPEG, and might
- even be the optimal choice for this content. GIF does a VERY good job
- compressing monochrome images, while JPEG was not designed for this
- application and it shows. While GIF is limited to 256 colors,
- quantization and dithering can provide an acceptable (if not optimal)
- image form 24 bit color, and would probably be a better compromise.
-
- If a less commonly used format is acceptable, I suppose compressed 24
- bit TIFF would be an even better (but larger) solution than GIF.
-
- This is just a suggestion for this interesting publication, I'm sure
- others will have preferences, possibly with some technical
- justification.
