- Dave Nadeau posted two excellent articles about the SDSC tools. This
- is really a followup to both.
-
- I enjoyed reading both of these. I certainly am not in agreement
- with everything written, but I now free that I have an understanding
- for the point of view SDSC has taken.
-
- Although I make every attempt to be well behaved net.person, a few
- weeks ago I posted a message which was apparently worded a bit to
- coldly for some. It was interpreted as somewhat offensive; a slam
- against the SDSC tools, because I said that I wasn't at all interested
- in the tools without full source code. I still prefer having the full
- source, but I now am interested, and plan to obtain the tools. The
- explanations in the first of Dave's articles helped considerably.
- Being primarly involved in scientific visualization, it is clear that
- the SDSC tools are deserving of a closer look.
-
- I still contend that free software should come with full source, but
- only because I would also content that free software should NOT be
- supported to the extent the SDSC is attempting.
-
- Given the fact that SDSC is attempting to provide tech support, I
- certainly would not release the source either. I simply don't think
- SDSC should be providing support. I'm amazed that they can afford it.
-
- My paradigm for software, right or wrong, says that tech support is
- provided with commercial products, and free software comes with source
- in lieu of support. Providing free software with support feels like
- a hybrid, and makes about as much sense to me as selling commercial
- software with source. Here again, that's just the tint on my world-view
- glasses.
-
- I still plan to check the tools out. It sounds like classy software.
-
- Thanks Dave, for the posts.
