  15. In TELECOM Digest V13, #9, Tom Lahey <toml@batfish.attmail.com> asks
  16. about alternatives to AT&T Mail, believing he will pay an average
  17. $2.05/issue to receive the Digest via AT&T Mail.

  19. In actuality, there is *no* usage charge to *receive* messages on AT&T
  20. Mail -- *unless* they are sent "COD." ("COD" messages must originate
  21. within AT&T Mail. If the recipient doesn't wish to pay for the message
  22. (s)he may DELETE it without reading it, in which case the sender is
  23. billed for its cost. An on-line mailbox may also be flagged to reject
  24. "COD" messages at the time they are submitted by the sender. Messages
  25. from the Internet, such as the Digest, may *not* be sent "COD.")

  27. Aside from any applicable recurring monthly and annual charges, AT&T
  28. Mail's only *usage* charges are for *sending* messages, receiving
  29. "COD" messages, and accessing "shared folders." This can be confirmed
  30. by calling the AT&T Mail billing office in Atlanta: 800 MAIL672
  31. (option 2).

  33. BTW, AT&T Mail now expects to finally implement its previously
  34. announced, but as yet unimplemented, Minimum Usage Billing requirement
  35. of $25/month/invoice, sometime next year (1994). That is when they
  36. expect to convert to a new billing system. Before anyone panics,
  37. remember that several mailboxes may be billed together in a single
  38. invoice.
