- Actually, there's no correlation between getting back a different
- modem and the difficulty of repairing yours. Hayes, PPI, and
- several other companies insure a quick turnaround on repairs by
- having a pool of factory-refurbished, fully-tested modems ready to
- ship from the repair department. When a modem comes in for repair,
- it goes into the queue to be refurbished, and one of those that has
- already been refurbished is sent back immediately. You get quick
- turnaround whether your modem was completely fried or just had a
- switch set wrong, and a smooths out the peaks (e.g., when everybody
- in Florida sends their modem in for repair the same week after a
- series of thunderstorms).
-
- The only exception to this is when a modem comes in with a corporate
- asset tag or something like that. In that case, you at least get
- back your original cabinetry, because the repair department won't
- try to transfer the tag.
