- MSD reports the UART. I've since gotton it working, after a fashion. For
- some unkown reason, I can't run it off port 2, but can run it off port 4. If
- I switch from port 4 to port 2 while the computer's running, reconfigure the
- software, port 2 works fine- until I turn it off. When I turn the computer
- back on, the modem won't respond. I'm leaving it on com port 4 for the time
- being, but want to find out what's going on. My old Best Data 2400 works
- fine on com port b.
-
- The Scout+ came with two fax programs; neither can access the modem, even
- when it's on com port 4 and is responding to other programs. Strange.
-
- Changing the initialization string is what got things rolling for me; I'm
- using AT&C1&D2 to start with, then ATZ to recall AT*F3*E9&C1S0=0 from the
- modem's nonvolatile memory. I know this is clumbsy as all hell, but intend
- to clean it up. I don't understand why I have to use the string &C1 &D2 (DCD
- follows normal RS-232, disconnect after DTR loss) when these are the factory
- values, according to the manual. I was using the initialization string AT&F
- (fetch factory settings) originally, but it didn't do the magical number for
- the modem. &C1 &D2 works.
-
- I've been routinely connecting at 14,400 on local BBS's; after years of
- creeping along at 2400 (230 cps average), it's a bit breathtaking to be
- _reliably_ downloading at 1,450 cps! The U of Mn's slipserver limits speeds
- to 9600, but this is a tremendous improvement. I have a feeling that once I
- get over the port glitch, I'll be a great Scout+ fan.
