- Yes, you are doing the right thing. You will find that error-correction
- (which is now standard) is a very handy thing. And the data rates are
- quite good.
-
- So now a question or two. Does your computer have a serial port? If
- so, does the serial port have RTS and CTS lines? If so, are you
- running a telecommunications program (Procomm Plus, perhaps) that
- can handle RTS-CTS flow control (aka hardware flow control)? If so,
- then you are in luck. Most any serial V.32 or V.32bis modem will work
- fine.
-
- Now, assume the answers to those questions are "no". Then are you
- running a telecom program that handles XON-XOFF flow control? If so,
- you are probably still okay.
-
- If you choose to post again, you might include this information:
-
- the serial speeds offered at your serial port
- whether or not your serial port has RTS and CTS
- what telecommunications program you plan to use.
-
- It would be a pity, of course, if my post prompts you to buy a $300-400
- modem and you find it won't work with your computer. I would
- recommend the ZyXEL U-1496E, but there are lots of other good ones, too.
- But you can get a good 386 machine nowadays for between $500 and $1000.
- You may end up choosing to get a new machine as well.
-
- Hope this helps.
