- I think we are both right. In "the old days" IP-people referred to routers
- as IP-gateways. Much of the literature still reflects this. cisco got
- their start as a maker of IP gateways/routers. Nowadays, we (meaning
- network architectrs) try to stick to router as the name of an internetworking
- device which operates at the network layer.
-
- Also, don't confuse terms used by an ENGINEER with those used by a MARKETEER.
- Engineers use terms which properly describe (and differentiate) devices
- by function. Marketeers use terms which will cause the best reaction in
- prospective customers. "Gateway" is much more image-evoking than bridge,
- router, repeater or almost anything else. Hence, they use the term a lot.
-
- I agree that the ISO terminology (end system, intermediate system) is
- also clear, but it doesn't wuite "roll off the tongue".
-
- Now, the next thing I am trying to get these "Damn Yankees" to do is
- to pronounce "router" correctly! It is "ROO-ter", not "RAOW-ter"!!
-
- (It is also an East-Cast/West-Coast problem here. These "Damn
- Californians" don't pronounce it correctly! :-) )
