  14. Network Certification

  16. Network General has launched a program to certify network engineers via
  17. a certification test based upon existing network technology (Comm Week).
  18. The engineers would be certified from tests based upon products from
  19. existing vendors.

  21. I cannot think of a more insidious program designed to stifle
  22. innovation.  The idea stinks of an effort to codify existing network
  23. architectures, preventing a more advanced form of distributed processing 
  24. to emerge.  HP is doing itself a dis-service by joining the program.

  26. I have seen a lot of maneuvers in Silicon Valley, designed to protect
  27. technology, and all of these have led to a steady outflow of innovation
  28. from Silicon Valley to points elsewhere.  In all cases the CEOs of the
  29. local companies engage in high-jinks designed not to create new
  30. multi-vendor solutions for the customer, but to protect older
  31. technology or control the development of new.  This certification
  32. program falls into the later group.
