- I've noticed many people asking about different software used for
- information search and retrieval.
- l
- One of the sweetest directories created is called the:
-
- Datapro Directory of Microcomputer Software.

- It's not cheap. I go to the Business/Soc Sciences library at U.C.
- Berkeley to consult it. There are three loose leaf volumes.
-
- Each entry includes information on the product name, corporate
- name, corporate address and phone.
- Single sentences describe the software function, hardware,
- operating system, minimum memory requirements, peripherals, source code
- and availability, pricing, customization available, maintenence provided,
- documentation, training available, current users (numbers of) and first
- installation date.
-
- Then each system has a description of one to several
- paragraphs of information, apparently provided by the software producer.
-
- There are several indexes to help you find the product; by application,
- product name, computer systems, and vendors. Often noted is the
- availability of demonstration copies.
-
- The catagories used include (but aren't limited to) accounting,
- agribusiness, banking, data communications, data/database management, ...
- engineering,...manufacturing...medical, payroll and personnel,
- programming language processors, programming aids...
-
- Storage and retrieval systems are listed under data/database
- management.
