  14. monthly", jan-feb 91 issue, page #24.

  16. This is an actual alert to IBM field engineers that went out to all IBM 
  17. field offices.  The person who wrote this seems to have been very serious.  
  18. Most of us think it is funny.
  19.  
  20. Abstract: Mouse balls available as FRU  (field replacement unit)
  21.  
  22. Mouse balls are now available as FRU.  Therefore, if a mouse fails to 
  23. operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement.  
  24. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls 
  25. should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.

  27. Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the 
  28. underside of the mouse.  Domestic balls will be larger and harder than 
  29. foreign balls.  Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the 
  30. manufacturer of the mouse.  Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop-off 
  31. method.  Domestic balls are replaced using the twist-off method.  Mouse 
  32. balls are not usually static sensitive.  However, excessive handling can 
  33. result in sudden discharge.  Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse 
  34. may be used immediately.

  36. It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for 
  37. maintaining optimum customer satisfaction, and that any customer missing his 
  38. balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.
