- I haven't seem any FAQs in this newsgroup, but would appreciate seeing
- one. I have on occasion had to use some db products and have an interest
- in some sort of overview in what is available, etc. Some of my appetite
- for this subject has been quenched recently by a couple of books that I
- include below for general interest and for those of us in the infant
- stage of our inquries:
-
- 1. Mattison, Rob, Understanding DB Mgmt Systems, Mc Graw-Hill, 1993,
- ISBN 0-07-040973-0, about $50.
- My need to by this wasn't great enough to overcome the price, but
- a definite plus was an appendix of describing the basics of some
- 50 or so odd packages. About a page or two was devoted to each.
- Informix, Ingress, etc. covered.
- 2. Date, C. J., Database, A Primer, Addison-Wesley, 1983, about $20.
- Date has some loftier books, but this is a pretty decent little
- one.
- 3. Litton, Gerry M., Introduction to DB Mgmt, PCB Publishers, 1987.
- Estimated prices is about $40-50. I stumbled onto this one during
- a break from a recent ski trip in the Sierras in a library in
- Sonora (50 miles from Yosemite). A pretty nice intro to many
- aspects of the subject.
-
- Anyway, these have satisfied my curosity about what is happening in
- the land of database products, so I am posting this note here for
- the benefit of others.
-
- It would be nice to see a FAQ for this group. I really liked the idea
- of the appendix sited above in Mattison's book. Something like it
- might be useful here. There seem to be a very large number of db
- products, and it would be useful for some of us occasional users to
- be able to get some info on the subject. My interest came from just
- wanting to know what Nomad was and anything else about it that might
- be helpful.
