- I did a few tests yesterday. I compressed my Windows
- \windows and \windows\system (lots and lots of fonts)
- directories, and also tried it on the game Civilization.
- In both cases, the difference between PKZIP's new maximum
- compression and ARJ's (-jm), was about 3k in favor of ARJ.
- Time-wise, ARJ took a bit more than three times as long.
-
- I conducted tests on a 386-20 (DX) with no math coprocessor,
- a 2048k smartdrv 4.0 cache in XMS, and 4 free megs of XMS
- memory. PKZIP ran in it's 386 & XMS modes. I don't know
- if arj did or not (I don't know if there's a special switch).
-
- The slow processor made timing easy. On the 486, the difference
- was still very noticible, but not too important.
-
- Pretty impressive. In encouraged me to put PKZIP back on
- my harddisk for somethingother than for use by rearj.
-
- I'm waiting for the next version of ARJ.
