- #>Truth is, Quicken is a well know and reviewed product and I think a person
- #>could probably determine if it would meet their needs without actually
- #>trying it out. That isn't true with BAM (or most shareware, for that matter).
- #
- # There are other considerations. For instance, with a shareware package
- # you get low cost upgrades (not mentioned in the manual, but upgrades
- # are only $10), your input gets *noticed*, shareware authors are more
- # receptive to comments or complaints.
-
- Good point, but most programs don't need a lot of upgrades.
- I do like the idea that I can write to the author directly as
- I have on a few occasions.
-
- # Finally, BAM is not like Quicken. It doesn't print checks, nor does it
- # give you some budget forecasting. Why not? Because *I* truly believe
- # there are people out there who need a *simple* bank program just to
- # keep track of several accounts. Should they pay more for this "simple"
- # program? Well, in general shareware costs more to produce and market.
-
- I agree, and was not trying to make the point that Quicken was
- a better product, only that most people can read product
- reviews on it and probably decided if it sounds right for them.
- They could still be disappointed, though, and are then stuck
- with a product they don't like.
-
- # Our registered users have given us a lot of constructive feedback, and
- # all are still using the program. (Which is amazing considering some
- # registered back in 1987!) When asked if they would, today, pay $35 for
- # the program, they all said yes. As we get more registrations, the
- # price lowers...
-
- You have convinced me to take a copy to our User Group's next
- meeting and add it to the shareware library. Hopefully, some
- will try it and register it. My only complaint (without
- actually trying BAM) is that I have a program that I have been
- using for 2 years now called PCA (Personal Checking Account)
- that does all I need (basically an electronic register with
- search capability, etc) and it only cost me $10 to register it.
- Maybe that is too little for a good and useful product, but it
- fits my rather limited software budget and I am one that likes
- to register as many programs that I use as I can.
