  15. I don't know, but when I made some sporadic testing almost a year
  16. ago, the results were then rather discouraging.  The lags tended to
  17. be from 2-5 weeks, and most importantly some files did not show up
  18. at all at many databases where they should have been.  Perhaps
  19. things have changed since then (I hope so), but at least back then
  20. archie's usefulness in pinpointing recent versions was poor.  But it
  21. is a very useful start when you are looking for something
  22. established, and know fairly accurately the stem of the filename.

  24. Note that I am not castigating archie or rooting for our own systems
  25. (I have no reason for that).  But my advice for looking for a
  26. program is to start by looking at the following filelists
  27. (especially the first two) and augmenting the results with a archie
  28. search.

  39. You might also wish to look at the BBS filelists we have.  Not to
  40. get the files from those BBSes, but just to additionally see if the
  41. kind of programs are in existence that you are looking for, and did
  42. not find on SIMTEL20 or Garbo lists.  At garbo those additional
  43. (oldish) lists are in the /pc/bbs directory.
