- I believe that the terminology RAID refers to the hardware component,
- which is essentially a group of several SCSI disks and the necessary
- controller. We have one installed where I work, manufactured by EMC.
- It replaced two strings of 3390s and their controllers. We have
- approximate capacity of 60 GBytes in one 19 inch rack. Quite a
- savings on real estate of the raised floor!
-
- I have not examined the individual drives carefully, but I believe
- that the individual units are of a size similar to that of a full-
- sized PC hard disk. There are about 20 of them in the rack. They
- perform noticibly faster than the old Blue variety, and the price
- was reasonable.
-
- I understand that there are other companies that also manufacture
- similar hardware; I believe that Symetrics and Tandem might be two.
