- At the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, we conduct two sampling surveys
- of fish abundance using bottom trawl nets using a stratified random sampling
- design. As is often the case we would like to improve the precision
- of estimates from our survey and their robustness without having to take
- more samples. I would appreciate any information on references in the
- statistical literature pertaining to a couple of questions.
-
- 1. Has any recent work been done on restricted randomization schemes?
- Rather than do a stratified sampling design, one alternative is to do
- a systematic (spatially) sampling. A compromise type of design would
- be to do a stratified design, but restrict the spatial allocation of
- sampling sites within each strata to achieve a more uniform (but not
- systematic) spatial distribution of sampling effort.
-
- 2. Is there such a thing as a stratied median? One can certainly
- compute the median for each stratum, but how do you combine these
- medians (since averaging the medians would not necessarily give you
- the median for the whole survey area).
-
- Any information on these points would be greatly appreciated. If there is
- sufficient interest and response, I will post a summary of mailings.
-
- Thanks in advance.

- Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back
- of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only
- way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another
- way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it. And then
- he feels that perhaps there isn't. Anyhow, here he is at the bottom....
