  12. Thanks to all who provided solutions of varying complexity to my
  13. problem with multiple duplicates from an attempted MERGE.
  14.  
  15. The embarrassing solution is that I was using the wrong variable when
  16. subsetting the large file into its components.  I have two variables
  17. with similar names--one produces duplicates in the subset and the other
  18. does not. Merge was, in fact, working just as it was supposed to work,
  19. but I was not dealing with the data subsets I thought I was.
