  14. Here's something that may help.  The most recent UU encoded file from
  15. Frederik Pedersen (hi Frederik!) wouldn't decode for me.  I looked at
  16. it in NB and noticed that it contained lower-case e-circumflexes.
  17. This looked like the sort of substitution our mailer makes for
  18. unwelcome characters.  So, I checked to see what lower-ASCII
  19. characters were _not_ in the file: these turned out to be the upright
  20. line, the circumflex, and the tilde.  Replacing the e-circumflexes
  21. with each of these in turn revealed that the circumflex is the
  22. correct character: with circumflexes in place, the file decodes.

  24. No doubt everyone's system is doing different things to these files,
  25. but the method might work: look for upper-ascii characters and by a
  26. process of elimination work out what lower-ascii characters they have
  27. been substituted for.
