  27. veronica:  Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-wide Index to
  28. Computerized Archives.

  30. veronica offers a keyword search of most gopher-server menus
  31. in the entire gopher web.  As archie is to ftp archives,
  32. veronica is to gopherspace.  A veronica search produces a menu of
  33. gopher items, each of which is a direct pointer to a gopher data source.
  34. Because veronica is accessed through a gopher client, it is easy to use,
  35. and gives access to all types of data supported by the gopher
  36. protocol.

  38. veronica was designed as a response to the problem of
  39. resource discovery in the rapidly-expanding gopher web.
  40. Frustrated comments in the net news-groups have recently
  41. reflected the need for such a service.  Additional
  42. motivation came from the comments of naive gopher users,
  43. several of whom assumed that a simple-to-use service would
  44. provide a means to find resources "without having to know
  45. where they are."

  47. The result of a veronica search is an automatically-
  48. generated gopher menu, customized according to the user's
  49. keyword specification.  Items on this menu may be drawn from
  50. many gopher servers.  These are functional gopher items,
  51. immediately accessible via the gopher client ... just
  52. double-click to open directories, read files, or perform
  53. other searches -- across hundreds of gopher servers.  You
  54. need never know which server is actually involved in filling
  55. your request for information.  Items that are appear
  56. particularly interesting can be saved in the user's bookmark
  57. list.

  59. Notice that these are NOT full-text searches of data at
  60. gopher-server sites, just as archie does not index the
  61. contents of ftp sites, but only the names of files at those
  62. sites.  veronica indexes the TITLES on all levels of the
  63. menus, for most gopher sites in the Internet.  258 gophers
  64. are indexed by veronica on Nov. 17, 1992;  we have
  65. discovered over 500 servers and will index the full set in
  66. the near future.   We hope that veronica will encourage
  67. gopher administrators to use very descriptive titles on
  68. their menus.

  77. Foster and Fred Barrie at University of Nevada.  As we
