  11. I don't want to get into debating the meaningfulness or fairness of
  12. "prestige" (or, more importantly, "perceived prestige"), but the fact
  13. is that it's a part of life for MD/PhDs as well as academically-minded
  14. MDs.  So, if one has ambitions of running a major lab, or becoming famous,
  15. or doing something unusual (say, an MD/PhD who wants to do neurosurg along
  16. with sociology...), then one had better have the bluest of blue-chip
  17. credentials on one's CV, regardless of whether you believe they *really*
  18. mean much or represent reality.  Enough said.
