  34. In my original post I was responding to a comment that First-year English
  35. (FE) was the only required course that students in college must take--all
  36. other core requirements being essentially selectable electives. My own
  37. college experience in the mid 70s was quite different from this as I was
  38. required to take a number of specific courses. And where I teach we require
  39. a number of sprecific courses (including intermediate writing courses) in
  40. which the student has either no choice or the choice is a very narrow range
  41. of courses which each must be equivalent in terms of the total amount of
  42. work and the types of assignments given.
