  33. Welcome to the first Hunt of the New Year.  This Hunt is running a
  34. little late due to a small but tenacious virus (carbon-based variety),
  35. that has me pooped.
  36.  
  37. This Hunt has a maximum of 43 points (with the extra credit).
  38.  
  39. I'm pleased to announce that past Hunts are now being archived at the
  40. Coalition for Networked Information.  Thanks to Craig Summerhill and
  41. Paul Evan Peters.

  59. THE RULES
  60. ---------

  62. 1. There are a total of 12 questions.  The first 11 questions all
  63. count toward your score.  I have personally verified that each of
  64. these can be answered using only the resources of the Net.  These are
  65. contrived questions.
  66.  
  67. 2. The last question is the mystery question.  I don't know if there's
  68. an answer to this on the Net.  I may or may not have tried to find
  69. one.  These questions usually come to me from people asking for
  70. information.  This is a real question.
  71.  
  72. 3. Each of these first 10 questions carries a value in parentheses.
  73. This point value is my best guess on how tough that question is to
  74. answer.  The scale is 1 (easy), to 10 (hard).  Total points for all
  75. questions is listed at the top of this message.  Extra credit
  76. questions are always worth 1, not because they're easy, but because
  77. they're extra credit.

  79. 4. Answer as many questions as you can.  Partial credit is awarded.

  81. 5. Teams are allowed to submit entries.  These must be designated as
  82. such.  Pick a team name.  Team entries will be scored separately from
  83. individual entries.

  85. 6. All answers must be mailed to me.  My standard signature will
  86. be at the bottom of this message.

  88. 7. The contest will run for one week from the date of posting of this
  89. message.  The deadline should appear in the header at the top of this
  90. message.

  97. 1. Whoever answers all the questions first shall be declared the
  98. winner.

  100. 2. In the event that nobody answers all the questions, the player
  101. with the highest point total shall be declared the winner.
  102.  
  103. 3. If there is a tie for highest point total, the player who
  104. responded first shall be declared the winner.
  105.  
  106. 4. Assume you're answering the question for someone who understands
  107. the basic network tools (ftp, telnet, finger, gopher, etc.), but just
  108. doesn't know where the data is.  Answers like:

  110.         ftp host.university.edu

  112. ...will not score as high as:
  113.  
  114.         anonymous ftp to host.university.edu
  115.         cd /pub/documents
  116.         file is called important.txt.Z
  117.  
  118. Don't feel like you have to tell someone how to use ftp.  Instead,
  119. tell them where they can find what they're looking for, and what tool
  120. to use to find it.

  139. more experienced emacs users?

  168. Howdy,
  169.   I just saw your latest internet hunt questions, and I am thinking
  170. that you are the right person to ask this question.  I have been
  171. trying to locate an online source of the billboard top 100, or top
  172. forty for country,soul or r&b.  I know that billboard magazine is
  173. indexed in asap2 which is offered by Dialog, and I have tried
  174. searching it, but no luck, any suggestions
