  13. Just checking in with a request.

  15. This a.m. I talked with a mother to ask permission to have a child stay late
  16. and paint on our mural.  The mom told me that the son came home last night
  17. asking all kinds of questions about why he is deaf.  She said he is very
  18. depressed and is angry.  She talked to him about growing up and getting a job
  19. and he say - Why?  No one will talk to me there.  She said don't you want to
  20. have a family?  You will have to have a job to support them.  He said, No.  I
  21. don't want to.  He said that is for hearing people and he is not hearing.

  23. Yesterday we watched a video from Gallaudet about Gallaudet.  Then we talked
  24. about Dummy Hoy.  This is what prompted his mood and questions.

  26. O.k.  Help me deaf people.  What are some things I can do to help him deal with
  27.  these emotions in a positive manner?  I can and will invite some deaf adults
  28. in to the class to talk about their lives and growing up deaf.  What else?

  30. I know some of you may tell me this would not happen if he were in a deaf
  31. school.  That may be the case and may not be.  I would rather think that each
  32. one of us comes to a place where we think about who we are and have to deal
  33. with that person.

  35. So, if you will comment on positive ways to help this kid I would greatly
  36. appreciate it.  And, if you want to take this opportunity to bash mainstream
  37. programs that is fine as well.  I'll read all posts and weigh them.  The
  38. extremity and diversity of thought just allows me to have a more balanced
  39. view.

  41. So, if you have a minute today to invest in this kid (not to mention this
  42. teacher - again) we would both appreciate it.

  44. BTW, my student teacher is sitting here watching as I type.  What an experience
  45. on her second day here.  Lots to learn for the experienced one of us - imagine
  46. what lies ahead for her.  Good beginning, eh?
