- Hi everyone,
- I talked with some people about deaf persons who are self-employed. It
- seems that at least in Israel, an essential ingredient for success has
- been a normally-hearing partner in the business.
-
- The talk was in context of starting some sort of counselling/self-help
- group/grapevines kind of service for deaf businessmen (perhaps similar to
- the self-help groups of businesswomen, started by feminist activists
- who seek to liberate women from economic dependence upon men).
-
- What I'm asking you is:
- 1. What is the situation in your country concerning deaf businesspersons
- and what special needs do they have to succeed in their endeavors?
- 2. Are there any services provided by Associations of the Deaf and/or
- Hard-of-hearing in your area, which are geared toward those who are
- in business for themselves (such as tax counselling, legal counselling,
- help in locating contacts etc.)? If yes, can you describe what
- services are available?
- 3. What, in your opinion, is required for a deaf businessperson to succeed
- (over and above any qualities which are required by normally-hearing
- persons)? How feasible is it to succeed alone nowadays, in the era
- of TDDs and FAX machines?
