- Now the view from the other side . . . :-)
-
- I just started working part-time at a Lane Bryant over X-mas, and
- will probably keep the job just for the discount. I can assure you,
- that at *my* store, customer service is very good. :-), but LB
- sales associates are *not* paid by any sort of commission, just
- at flat, very low, salary.
-
- (Oh, and by the way, I'm a size 26/28 saleswoman, and proud of it!)
-
- I've learned quite a few interesting things about the store since
- I started working there. Lane Bryant is now owned by the Limited,
- which also owns Limited stores (duh), Lerners, and Victoria's Secret.
- When the Limited took over LB, it wanted to give it a "hipper" image
- which would appeal to younger buyers and "borderline" buyers, e.g.,
- the 14/16s who could conceivably find clothes at "non-specialty"
- stores. Hence the (very) casual clothes, predominance of stirrups,
- etc. AND, hence the lack of large size models in their advertisements,
- in-store posters, etc. That was one of the first questions I asked
- when I started working there . . . "Why are all the models size 8s?
- If that?" Because, with true marketing genius, LB doesn't want
- to be seen as a "fat store". Bright, huh. Again, its that teen/young
- adult and 14/16 market they don't want to scare off. And it seems
- to be working. LB consistently has the highest profit of all the
- Limited holdings.
-
- BTW, I agree with you about the tights. I HATE these new things.
- The reason for the difference is they got a new manufacturer, and
- decided to concentrate on "fashion pattern" tights instead of the
- good old comfortable, sturdy, long-lasting ones.
-
- One quick story - during the month of December (and those of you who
- work retail know how hellish that month can be), every week we would
- get gifts from the home office - a tin of cookies to "give us energy",
- a 5 lb bag os M & Ms to "charge us up", Hershey's Kisses, chocolate
- Santas . . . all of us at the store (and we're all large), were
- amused by what we saw as a blatant attempt to keep us wearing Lane
- Bryant sizes. One woman decided that if we were getting all of this
- candy, the sales associates over at Victoria's Secret must be getting
- rice cakes or Slimfast.
-
- Oh well, maybe you had to be there. :-)
