  15. This saturday morning, I received a phone call from my father, a member of 
  16. Downtown United Presbteryan (sp?) Church in Rochester, NY. (Home of
  17. Janie Spahr, the lesbian pastor who is being barred from her congregation.)

  20. He feels very strongly about the stubbornness and "un-christian" behavior
  21. of the people who oppose the congregation's choice for pastor. He explained
  22. that he "wanted to become gay" (his words) to make himself a target for the
  23. injustices that are committed against homosexuals.

  25. So, his plan is to take a partner, while still remaining faithful to his wife. He would
  26. become part of the gay community and thus would place his support amongst
  27. the people who are being wronged. He knows this will cause alot of problems
  28. with his friends and business associates who are not as open-minded as others.
  29. And he doesn't have any idea how he is going to do this, but he desperately
  30. wants to do something.

  32. I have several problems with this.
  33. 1: He is not homosexual. (I don't believe he is in denial) He vows that he would 
  34. not be unfaithful to his wife and not take a lover, but "would have a partner." 
  35. Whomever his partner is could get seriously hurt. (mentally and emotionally) and
  36. by "becoming gay" he is saying that he believes homosexuality is a person's
  37. choice not something that can only be a certain way. (I don't know how else to
  38. say this, but I believe that a homosexual person is homosexual at birth, and
  39. there is nothing that can be done to make that person "be" heterosexual.)
  40.  
  41. 2: He seems to wish to be a martyr, but I think his method will hurt and insult
  42. more than help and aid. The community that he wishes to help may view him
  43. as an outsider or worse an enemy. And therefore he coul cast off some of his 
  44. friends to only have his new friends shun him. (Not a very tenable situation)
  45.  
  46. 3: There must be better ways for a heterosexual person to fight the injustices
  47. against homosexuals than to artifically become one. 
  48.  
  49. Am I off base? 
  50.  
  51. I would not have as many concerns if my father had said "Son, I'm gay", but
  52. this seriously distrubs me.
