  25. If they don't believe that the Scriptures are the word of God,
  26. then they don't need to change the meaning of "almah" in order
  27. to disbelieve the virgin birth.  They could just argue
  28. that the prophecy is symbolic.  (As you conservative
  29. Christians do elsewhere in Isaiah with "he shall see
  30. his offspring and prolong his days".)

  32. And if they do believe the Scriptures are the word of God,
  33. then they shouldn't believe in the virgin birth
  34. unless they're convinced that the Scriptures actually say "virgin".

  36. You make it sound as if the v.b. is a Protestant dogma.

  38. Your scenario only makes sense if they believe the
  39. Scriptures are the word of God, and they take the
  40. *absence* of virgin birth as a dogma, retrofitting
  41. their scholarship to this unorthodox dogma.  This
  42. sounds pretty unlikely, since it presupposes not
  43. liberalism but a kind of dogmatic heresy.

  45. The most convincing reason that so many scholars,
  46. both Jewish and Christian, reject the meaning
  47. of "virgin" for "almah" is that the word simply
  48. doesn't mean "virgin".

  50. Elsewhere in your postings you imply that that the only
  51. true scholars are the ones who have complete faith in
  52. their conclusions before they begin --- a very odd
  53. notion of scholarship, and one which is at complete
  54. variance with mine.
