-
- I think there needs to be a balance between "gimmick" magic and solid,
- hard-core, book learned magic.
-
- To become a competent performer, one first needs to have a solid,
- working knowledge of the major concepts, including stage presence,
- misdirection, card and coin sleights, etc. It's kinda like knowing DOS
- well enough to switch to Norton Commander or XTREE.
-
- Only then can a performer critically examine the value of gimmicked or
- even self-contained magic. (Or, for that matter, even "read" the
- advertising descriptions.)
-
- And even then, it's sometimes hard to distinguish what should be
- considered a gimmick trick. I don't think Card Warp (a brilliant
- close-up illusion) is a gimmick trick. In fact, it might have been
- included in a "collection of tricks" book had it not had commercial
- potential as a stand-alone.
-
- What about the visible penetration of a coin through a rubber sheet (I
- can't recall the commercial name)? Sure you're using a gimmick or prop
- -- but is a fabulous illusion.
