- You would say that some of the programs in the Norton set are made for data
- recovery but since I use a 'misfeature' of the main NU program, I consider it
- a hack worth mentioning in alt.hackers.
-
- Ever got one of those disks that give all kinds of errors when read by copy or
- some other program and don't give an error at all when you're looking at it
- sector by sector ?
-
- I got one of those last weekend and I desperately needed the files stored on
- it.
- Copy failed (General Failure...), but reading the sectors of the file I was
- trying to copy worked fine.
-
- So, I loaded the file in the NU program and selected 'write item to disk'.
- This copies a selected item to another file. But, due to the design of NU
- it copies the file sector by sector (512 bytes) in stead of the normal
- big-buffer copying.
- It took quite a while but I could recover all the files on the disk.
-
- So, I hacked the Norton Utilities...
-
- (Now, all I still need to hack is a Rodime harddisk that likes to park itself
- so much it parks when heavily used instead of when turned of... Not a very nice
- harddisk to run a BBS on...)
