- I recently picked up the latest version of PC Gopher (version 1.05r3).
- With some consternation, I discovered it'll no longer Telnet out
- properly. Why? Not enough memory.
-
- Here's the deal. Our site (a university) maintains a Novell (3.11) lan for
- our faculty, staff and students. We use the ODI software. They use a lot
- of memory. After all the network stuff and my tsrs (about 12K worth) are
- loaded (this includes putting as much as possible into high memory - on
- a Zenith 386 with 4 mb), I have about 555K of free base memory.
-
- I had been using version 1.02 of PC Gopher (yes, I hadn't been paying
- attention to new releases). I got by with this amount of memory. Now,
- with version 1.05, it's not enough. The size of the executable has gone
- up. The only way I can get the full functionality out of PC Gopher (that
- is, by also being able to let it run Telnet) is to not load some of the
- Netware software. This gives me about 597K, enough to let it run Telnet.
- But, it means no lan access in the meantime.
-
- Since we're intending to support PC Gopher at our site, I have to view
- this situation from the perspective of our users. Many have older machines
- without high memory (so things like QEMM are out - assuming we/they could
- afford it in the first place). Many are not clever enough to play with the
- software, loading and unloading stuff, to get all the pieces/parts working.
- It needs to be transparent for them.
-
- The ideal long term solution might be for PC Gopher to swap itself to disk
- (or something like that) so as to leave more memory free. Since Novell, to
- my knowledge, is only supporting ODI, this is something that may come up
- more often for Novell sites.
-
- In the meantime, has anyone found a workaround? A tweak of some sort?
- I'd be much obliged for any tips! Thanks in advance,
-
