- : Yep, you uncovered the conspiracy... "Star Trek," "MASH," "All in the
- : Family" and so on were really not popular shows; they were just marketed
- : to annoy conservatives. And we all know how pro-feminist "Married with
- : Children" is. Seriously, you claim that liberals are minority, but
- : that TV shows are aimed at liberals; how then do networks turn a
- : profit (which is what they're interested in)?
- :
-
- You forgot Leave it to Beaver, Dick Van Dyke, Patty Duke, Dragnet, Superman,
- Batman, Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies, and countless other enormously
- popular shows that promoted healthy values.
-
- As for MASH, what kind of image of the military do you think its message
- intended to leave? Those who were in the military because they cared about
- the military were all depicted as idiots, sex maniacs, incompetents, and the
- like. And if Anita Hill worked for Hawkeye Pierce's practice, she'd have
- DAILY harassment complaints...
-
- The Jeffersons, a spinoff of All in the Family, depicted every single white
- person who ever appeared as a blithering idiot. Married with Children?
- You couldn't pick a worse example. Let's start with child abuse and go
- from there...
-
- Star Trek? It has a lot of problems, too. It suggests that in the future,
- abortion will be globally accepted as tolerable. It is anti-religion because
- it suggests in many shows that God is just some super alien, and a deranged
- one at that, who is easily defeated by mere mortals.
-
- As for profitability, Michael Medeved, co-host of sneak prevues wrote a
- book about hollywood. In it, he claims that G rated movies do significantly
- better at the box office, even in the 80's, yet Hollywood increased its
- output of R rated movies from 40% of all made to 61% of all made during the
- 80s. You know the kind of movies... Devil worship, sexual explicitness,
- and high-tech violence. He also points out that ~27,000 scripts were
- submitted to hollywood in 1992, and ~550 were made.
-
- As for aiming for a minority audience, it is clear that it is profitable
- enough.
-
- According to my 1992 Universal Almanac, 95% of american homes have a TV.
- And that TV is turned on for 6 hours. Some of us care enough about
- watching what kind of shows their kids watch. But some of us are not
- around for those 6 hours.
-
- And if you think that TV has little/no propaganda/brainwashing value, then
- answer these two simple questions. First, why do advertisers spend huge
- amounts of money to repeat the same message over and over again? And
- why did they take tobacco advertising off of TV and Radio?
-
- We haven't even gotten to NEWS coverage, which is just as bad.
-
- As for conspiracy... TV and Film media industries are extremely hard to
- break into. There are only 7 major film studios in hollywood. Until
- recent years, they were privately held/owned. And it is definately
- and all/old boy network, where the same people continuously get work,
- and it is hard for minorities to break in. And if you don't think the
- "best boy" of every film isn't in a labor union, think again.
