  11.    I'm pretty new to this sort of discussion, so expect
  12. me to say something naive.

  14.    I'm currently exploring the comparisons between 
  15. pre-fall Rome and the US.  Not theoretical comparisons,
  16. mind you... I'm more interested in actual events or
  17. changes in the societies.  One example:  Conditions for
  18. the poor in Rome became so bad that people started selling
  19. their infants into slavery.  I heard today that something
  20. comparable is happening today.  Some couples are selling
  21. their children.... not simply "giving them up" to adoption
  22. agents, but selling them --- the difference being in the
  23. motivation:  the inability to care for the child, or that
  24. coupled with financial need.
