  26. You know, Alan, the more I look at this statement, the funnier it
  27. looks.

  29. Here's Yitzhak Shamir, who was at the time not the member of a
  30. fringe cult but the highest elected official in Israel:

  32.      "If the Arabs of Israel won't come to their senses, reality
  33.      will be harder and laden with impending disaster," Mr.
  34.      Shamir said. "I am not afraid.  A test of strength between
  35.      us and them is like a contest between an elephant and a
  36.      fly." (The New York Times, March 29, 1988, p. A6)

  38.      Mr. Shamir standing atop an ancient West Bank castle, told
  39.      reporters: "Anybody who wants to damage this fortress and
  40.      other fortresses we are establishing will have his head
  41.      smashed against the boulders and walls."

  43.      ".... And we say to them from the heights of this mountain
  44.      and from the perspective of thousands of years of history
  45.      that they are like grasshoppers compared to us." (The New
  46.      York Times, April 1, 1988, p. A3)

  48. After a deranged follower of Meir Kahane killed a young Israeli
  49. girl at Beita, Shamir exclaimed: "The heart of the entire nation
  50. is boiling.... God will avenge her blood."

  52. The "fortresses we are establishing" refers to the settlements of
  53. Gush Emunim and other extremists. Anyone who gets in the way of
  54. Gush Emunim will get his or her head smashed "against the
  55. boulders and walls." The talk about "the heights of this mountain
  56. and from the perspective of thousands of years of history" is
  57. hardcore messianic sentiment (and reminds one rather of Hitler
  58. declaiming about the ancient and mystical German destiny). In the
  59. killing at Beita, Shamir failed to condemn the Kahanists who
  60. provoked and committed the act, but instead ranted that God
  61. (i.e., Israel and Shamir) would avenge the victim's blood.

  64. fanaticism: the quote from Hamas or the statements by Shamir, the
  65. then Prime Minister of Israel?
