  14. I recently came across a leaflet printed by PETA.
  15. In bold type on the front it read:

  17.        Their jaws clenched, reacting to the pain.
  18.        Cats were injected with embalming fluid while still alive
  19.  
  20. On the back: in bold type: unattributed quote
  21.  
  22.        "I watched as L cut open the rat.  Blood was spraying out.  He
  23.        smiled and told me, 'It's still alive.  The heart's pumping blood.' 
  24.        The rat was then hooked up to a formaldehyde tube.  His legs were
  25.        kicking."

  27. It sounds to me like this L character is quite the sadist.  What cruelty! 
  28. What inhumanity!

  30. I don't think so.  What their describing here is a standard lab. procedure
  31. called perfusing or "fixing" an animal.  What they conveniently forget to
  32. tell you is the entire procedure.

  34. First of all the animal is given near lethal doses of anesthetics
  35. (usually pentobarbital).  Because the animal will not be recessitated after
  36. the procedure large quantities of the anesthetic can be used.

  38. Once the animal is clearly "under" the chest cavity is opened to expose
  39. the heart.  Saline solution will be introduced through the atria of the
  40. heart in order to displace the blood.  Thus it is beneficial if the heart
  41. is still beating in order to facilitate exchange of the fluids.

  43. Next formaldehyde (or another embalming fluid) is introduced through the
  44. heart.  Again if the heart is still beating the embalming fluid is more
  45. efficiently dispersed through the body.

  47. Certain cells of the body function on ion generated
  48. electrical gradients (i.e. neurons, muscles etc...).  When the membrane of
  49. the cell becomes permeable to ions (depolarizes) the cell fires.  Muscle
  50. contract.  Neurons pass action potentials (electrical signals).
  51.  
  52. Formaldehyde permeablizes the cells.  Thus, muscles contract.  Jaws
  53. become "clenched". Legs start "kicking".
  54. Nerves responsible for encoding pain (nociceptors) fire.
  55. But the animal is unconscious.  Perhaps even more so than a human
  56. undergoing surgery.

  58. Now, go back and read the quotes from the leaflet.  Ask yourself,
  59. honestly, "Is this leaflet misleading?" and if so "Why does this
  60. organization need to rely on such tactics, if infact its cause
  61. is so correct already?"
