- The following Bangkok Post letter is to show that you cannot
- always believe in every story we wrote but if a mistake is found,
- we are not so hubris not to publish it.
- Bangkok Post has several supplements apart from three daily
- sections: News, Business and Outlook. On Monday, we have
- Investment and Property. On Wednesday, we have Post Database
- (about computer and technology). On Thursday we have Horizons
- about news from other regions of Thailand. On Friday we have
- Motoring. On Sunday we have Perspective.
- Apart from these, we have Shipping section on Monday, Wed and
- Fri.
- -- kamol notes
-
- SIR: I am writing in reference to the article in Horizons on December
- 17, 1992 describing images of the Lord Buddha within Amanpuri. This
- report is clearly very damaging to the reputation of both AMANPURI and
- AMANRESORTS.
-
- The facts contained in this article are erroneous and I wish to point
- these out as follows:
-
- 1. Amanpuri Hotel does not use Buddha images as mere decorations.
-
- 2. There are no headless Buddha images in the hotel.
-
- 3. Statues of the Lord Buddha do exist within the private homes over
- which the resort has no control. However, even in the private homes,
- the headless torsos are Hindu-Khmer and not those of the Lord Buddha.
-
- 4. Buddha images adorning hotel guest rooms, swimming pool and lobby
- are pure fiction as a visit to Amanpuri can readily testify.
-
- 5. The private home of the owner is just a private home -- not a VIP
- building for foreigners.
-
- 6. The photograph above the story is not Amanpuri's lobby. This is a
- living room of one of the privately owned villas.
-
- 7. Amanpuri has an open-door policy, and the resort is not reserved
- for VIP guests. In fact, many local Thai families frequent the hotel.
-
- 8. The hotel has one security gate, as do all Phuket hotels through
- which any person may freely travel, not "many checkpoints" as said in
- the article.
-
- 9. In the privately owned villa homes, there are a number of antiques
- the owners have purchased including images of the Lord Buddha and most
- of the homes have been blessed by monks from our local temple.
-
- 10. A number of spirit houses are placed throughout the resort, all of
- which are blessed and our staff pay respect to these on a daily basis,
- with traditional offerings.
-
- I am, therefore, compelled to write to draw your attention to the
- errors contained in this article.

- Amanpuri
