  22. BTW: Irving Berlin, aka Israel Baline, was one of my favorite composers,
  23. writing, among others, "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "G-d Bless America",
  24. and an old favorite from the 20's, "All Alone".

  26. BTW2: In addition to Jan Peerce, whom I was privileged to hear in a
  27. concert back in the 60's, there was another Jewish operatic tenor named
  28. Joseph Schmidt, from Switzerland I believe. He was very popular (1930's)
  29. throughout Europe, and starred in a few motion pictures, one being 
  30. "Ein Lied geht um die Welt" (A Song goes around the World). I saw it in
  31. the early 60's, and enjoyed the quality of his voice, but was saddened to
  32. learn that as a consequence of Nazi incarceration, he became ill and died
  33. shortly after WW II.
  34. I have a number of his songs on records and tapes, and still enjoy 
  35. listening to them. In fact, as I was driving to work today, the cassette
  36. I had in my car was playing "Heut' ist der schoenste Tag in meinem Leben".
  37. (Translation:  "Today is the most beautiful day of my life").

  39. THIS is my idea of "Social.culture.jewish"! I love it! Maybe it's because
  40. music is such a powerful motivator. Indeed it is, both for good and ill.
