- I couldn't agree more. It's deep rooted in the minds of many people
- in Japan. You should hear how average citizens talk about their own
- brethren (of both sexes) from the "buraku". But Japan's endemic racism
- extends beyond the "buraku". My aunt-in-law was wondering why some
- Koreans were complaining about being denied Japanese citizenship.
- I had to point out to her that these were *third* generation
- "Korean-Japanese"!!! She's from an older generation, so there might
- be some excuse, but it is a failure of the Japanese government, the
- education system, and the media that this kind of attitude and thinking
- still prevail. The end-product of the current education system are people
- who are (in general) indifferent, ignorant, and insensitive to important
- "issues" and lack the ability for critical thinking. (They are excellent
- at pointing out all the countries of the world on a map, and
- telling you that "Taika no Kaishin" happended in 645, and doing
- differentiation, and reading Kanbun.) Oops, I'm getting side-tracked.
-
- Japan's racism stems from many facets: history, its laws (including
- koseki-hou), its (lack of) education on social issues, and the media
- bias (away from real issues and towards Taka-Rie stuff). It's easy to
- change the laws, but it's harder to change people's attitudes. Education
- will be a good place to start.
-
- I think Mr. Asano nails it right on the head, too, when he states
- "when we are quiet and let this go on, we are just as guilty."
