- CNN did a segment on AIDS in India on World News dated 1/2/93. According to
- the report, about 1 million people have the virus in India. In Bombay alone,
- the toll cannot be accurately quantified because among the 100,000 plus
- prostitutes, awareness is only just beginning. Thanks to the efforts of people
- like Dr. Gilada, an AIDS "expert", and numerous social workers, condoms are
- being distributed around the notorious "red-light" areas of Kamathipura,
- Shuklaji Street and so forth.
-
- An earlier report suggested that Bombay may have the highest number of AIDS
- cases among cities in developing countries. Furthermore, if the rate of spread
- is not checked, by the year 2000, Bombay will have the highest number of AIDS
- cases for *any* world city.
-
- On a positive note, the Government of India has allocated 20% of this year's
- health budget to combat the disease through preventitive programs and AIDS
- research.
