- ILIGAN, Philippines (UPI) -- Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire with
- assault rifles and killed a former governor in front of his wife in the
- southern Philippines, police and witnesses said Tuesday.
- Police said Francisco Abalos, 48, who was defeated in the last
- election for governor in Lanao del norte, was gunned down at about 6:30
- a.m. local time, Tuesday at a gas station in Tubod, Iligan city, 450
- miles south of Manila.
- Elpidio Capiduso, who witnessed the shooting, said five men riding
- motorcycles opened fire on Abalos with M-16 Armalite rifles.
- Capiduso said Abalos and an assistant were in a Nissan four-door
- sedan waiting for his wife who was just arriving when the gunmen opened
- fire.
- ``It was so sudden, the men just opened fire and fled,'' Capiduso
- said.
- Abalos sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on
- arrival at Mercy hospital.
- District police commander Col.Porawa Tia said Abalos' unidentified
- companion was seriously wounded, while his wife Marietta was unhurt.
- There was no known motive for the attack but investigators were
- looking into the possibility the killing was politically motivated.
- Police sources said the former governor was linked to the killing of a
- politician in Manila shortly after the May 11 elections.
