  14. While visiting my parents over the holidays, my stepfather gave me
  15. a cassette of a lecture by Chuck Missler to listen to.  Missler
  16. claims to be an "internationally known business executive" who has
  17. been on the boards of dozens of large corporations, including chief
  18. executive of six of them.  He claims to have attended the Naval
  19. Academy and been in the Air Force, and to have had the highest of
  20. security clearances.
  21.    He is, however, associated with Hal Lindsey and Lambert Dolphin
  22. (former SRI scientist who promoted Barry Setterfield's "the speed of
  23. light is declining" theory).  Anyway, here are some of the claims he
  24. made on the tape I listened to:

  26. 1.  In Genesis 5, the meaning of the names in the genealogy give
  27. a message about the Messiah.  (He said exactly what it was, but I
  28. don't recall offhand.  He got the message by inserting prepositions
  29. of his own between nouns and verbs that were allegedly the meanings
  30. of the names in Hebrew.)  He also made the more general claim that
  31. absolutely everything in the Bible is meaningful--every number, every
  32. name, every apparent contradiction.

  34. 2.  In Genesis 49:10, the first letter of each Hebrew word spells out
  35. (in Hebrew) the message "I am Yeshua, the shepherd king."  (Anyone here
  36. know enough Hebrew to verify/refute this?)

  38. 3.  Russia, Syria, various north African nations, and Iran will soon
  39. invade/fire nuclear weapons at Israel.  Why soon?
  40.  
  41. 4.  Iran has just bought four nuclear missiles from one of the former
  42. Soviet republics, and they have only a seven-year "shelf life."
  43.  
  44. 5.  Islam predates Mohammed; it is a Babylonian religion which aims
  45. at world domination and involves the worship of Satan.
  46.  
  47. Missler publishes a monthly "Personal Update" newsletter (Koinonia
  48. House, P.O. Box D, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83816-0347), the December issue
  49. of which had an article criticizing the New International Version
  50. ("Nearly Inspired Version," according to Missler) and other modern
  51. translations based on the Codex Sinaiticus/Codex Vaticanus.  He
  52. claims that these versions were the result of deliberate tampering
  53. by gnostics--so it sounds like he's one of the "King James only"
  54. crowd.

  56. The December issue of his newsletter also advertised a series of
  57. "briefing packages" he sells, including one of interest to skeptics:

  59.     Monuments: Sacred or Profane
  60.     The recent discoveries of apparent monuments on the Planet Mars,
  61.     and their possible relationship to the Great Pyramid of Egypt
  62.     and Stonehenge are explored.

  64. I think this guy is a complete crank, but any comments on the above
  65. (especially #2) would be appreciated.  I would particularly welcome
  66. any information about criticisms of Mr. Missler by Christians which
  67. I could send to my parents.
  68.    It is possible that he also has some association with Ron Wyatt
  69. or David Fasold (of the "Noah's Ark has been found at the *foot* of
  70. Mt. Ararat" claims, which have already been well-debunked by evangelical
  71. Christians such as John Morris of the Institute for Creation Research),
  72. but I base this only on comments at the very beginning of the tape I
  73. heard, which did not record the beginning of his lecture.  (He made some
  74. comment about Noah's Ark being found, but did not elaborate.)
