- Tonite I decided to look around with my satellite dish to see what I
- could get east of spacenet 2. The first thing I did was goto where I'd
- seen the BBC evening news before. Once I had the Brightstar test pattern
- on transponder 11 I started going thru the channels. On transponder 20 I
- found a STRONG test pattern that was fading in and out kind of funny.
- ( For Satellite TV.) When I tried to peak the signal I found that, while
- there were peaks and nulls, dish position didn't much matter! I could go
- from the east limit (about 10 degrees off the horizon) west to around
- telstar 3 before I lost it.
-
- Right away I thought about the microwave tower 2 blocks south of me, but
- the signal wasn't so strong that it interfered with any of the satellite
- signals on the same transponder. And there aren't any other microwave
- towers around that I know of. It's about 1:30 AM so I can't call one of
- my friends with dishes to see what they see. The test pattern said "TOC
- Madison Wisconsin" up in the corner so I called a friend in Wisconsin
- that I knew would still be up and asked him about it. When He looked up
- 4110 MHz in the frequency database he's got we figured out that it's got
- to be a link in the microwave backbone that links all of the Public
- Television stations together in Wisconsin. The nearest possible station
- being in Eau Claire around 80 miles away and on the far side of a very
- large ridge.
-
- As I'm typing here, Wisconsin Public Radio just came up on the
- subcarrier I've got on.
-
- I did check propagation on 2 meters and it wasn't up at all. It'll be
- interesting to see if it's still here this afternoon, and if anyone else
- can see it around here.
