  15. The Portuguese service now broadcasting on Spacenet 3, Tr. 24,that Gary
  16. mentioned in his post is Radio Televisao Portuguesa Internacional,
  17. broadcasting from Lisbon.  The service started officially on Saturday with
  18. kind of an informal inauguration show lasting some hours and rebroadcast
  19. at least once during the day.  Guests included various
  20. government officials, an ex-bullfighter, a "fado" singer (a special type
  21. of Portuguese song), even a taped message from the President of Portugal
  22. etc.  Faxes were read from U.S. and Canadian well-wishers.  The picture
  23. quality was rocky on Saturday, but very much improved on Sunday from my
  24. location.  Programming on Sunday consisted of variety programs, childrens
  25. programming, broadcast of a Lisbon vs. Riga basketball game, news etc.
  26. This week we will even get a "telenovela" (i.e. soap opera), Chuva na Areija.

  28. It's interesting to note that now in the US we can receive regular
  29. broadcasts from both wealthiest (Germany) and probably the poorest
  30. (Portugal) EC countries.  I am impressed with the programming on both
  31. Services and hope that all of these new digital channels being talked
  32. about will include programming from all over the world -- kind of the
  33. Satellite equivalent of Short Wave! And here Auntie Beeb in London is dragging
  34. her heels....
