- The Portuguese service now broadcasting on Spacenet 3, Tr. 24,that Gary
- mentioned in his post is Radio Televisao Portuguesa Internacional,
- broadcasting from Lisbon. The service started officially on Saturday with
- kind of an informal inauguration show lasting some hours and rebroadcast
- at least once during the day. Guests included various
- government officials, an ex-bullfighter, a "fado" singer (a special type
- of Portuguese song), even a taped message from the President of Portugal
- etc. Faxes were read from U.S. and Canadian well-wishers. The picture
- quality was rocky on Saturday, but very much improved on Sunday from my
- location. Programming on Sunday consisted of variety programs, childrens
- programming, broadcast of a Lisbon vs. Riga basketball game, news etc.
- This week we will even get a "telenovela" (i.e. soap opera), Chuva na Areija.
-
- It's interesting to note that now in the US we can receive regular
- broadcasts from both wealthiest (Germany) and probably the poorest
- (Portugal) EC countries. I am impressed with the programming on both
- Services and hope that all of these new digital channels being talked
- about will include programming from all over the world -- kind of the
- Satellite equivalent of Short Wave! And here Auntie Beeb in London is dragging
- her heels....
