- NorthWest's frequent flyer program sends you two 10,000 mile fly-write
- tickets each time you pass another 20,000 miles. In addition to being able
- to trade these in for overseas travel, you can use them (with reservations
- subject to capacity controls) for one-way or round-trip travel (one ticket
- for each way). I keep them for emergency travel needs (an extra fly-write
- can be used to waive capacity controls and other restrictions) and have used
- them for one-way flights to save $$$.
-
- I don't imagine this would be sufficient for a heavy one-way traveller (unless
- you charge a lot on a WorldPerks credit card, AMEX, Diner's Club, or MCI), but
- it is useful for casual travel.
-
- You might also look into air-surface packages. For instance, the Amtrak
- deals I mentioned basically give you one-way travel on United for half the
- normal APEX fare (advanced purchase excursion). The details vary (prices are
- by zone) but the prices are generally attractive for air/rail combinations.
