  10. Kansas football is the essence of above average.  Some games "we" look
  11. great, some pathetic, most, we just win by the skin of the teeth
  12. (but we do win).  I do think that we are a legit top 25 team, but
  13. barely.  Here's my analysis, for those of you who asked....
  14.  
  15. Offense:
  16. Average/Streaky - Ku's bread and better is establishing a running
  17. game.  With injured FB Monte Cozzens returning, KU has a good tandem
  18. in the backfield (with Maurice Douglass).  QB Chip Hilleary was First
  19. Team All Big 8, mostly b/c his scrambling abilities, although he is an
  20. adequte passer.  The line is the story - they make or break the
  21. offense.  With Booth out So. starter), we are aching a bit, but if we
  22. can get one good series in the first quarter, this line thrives on
  23. momentum (as most others). WR's are very average, TE's are excellent
  24. (watch Dwayne Chandler to make lots of short-medium catches).  FG's
  25. are a gimme with Dan Eichloff, who only missed 4 all year (2 were
  26. blocked - long of 62 yards).

  28. Defense:
  29. Started off great.  Were leaders in scoring defense, passing, and
  30. rushing.  Fell apart mid season.  We have a VERY GOOD rushing defense,
  31. as is attested to by TWO opponents ending up with negative rushing
  32. yards.  But pass defense is awful.  Reasons: 1) top tackler LB Larry
  33. Theil injured in the OSU game (right before NU) out for season, 2) LB
  34. Steve Harvey injured, 3) CB Robert Vaughn missed the plane to Hawaii,
  35. so unless he pays his way, will miss the game, 4) LB Hassan Bailey on
  36. probation for disciplinary reasons, 5) The whole Secondary is
  37. painfully SLOW.  Ouch.  Nebraska: three TD passes in 1st quarter -
  38. ouch again.  BYU could really burn us here.  Eichloff's punting is
  39. respectable, but he can choke on this end of the ball.
  40.  
  41. Special Teams: We suffer again from being slow here.  And the main
  42. return guy, Charlie Bowen, is nicknamed "Fair Catch".  I've seen him
  43. return the ball twice.
  44.  
  45. Overall: Can beat BYU if we get early momentum.  If we get behind,
  46. forget it against a good passing team like BYU.
  47.  
  48. Players to watch:
  49. Hilleary    QB
  50. Chandler    TE
  51. Loneker        OL
  52. Stubblefield    DL
  53. Moore        DL
  54. Douglass    RB
  55.  
  56. If four of these six "leaders" are on, forget it - momentum can be
  57. produced artificially... And the Hawks could end a sorry late season
  58. streak.
