- Kepler Wessels won the toss and on a wicket that seemed to hold
- mega-runs on it, decided to bat. Azharadin admitted that he would also
- have batted.
-
- However the wicket had surprising bounce most of the day and a lot of
- bite and turn too. In the first hour there was prodigious swing from
- Kapil and Prabharkar and (as in Port Elizabeth), Wessels was bowled
- by Prab in the second over with no runs on the board. Thereafter the
- bowlers held the upper hand for the rest of the day. Kirsten again
- failed (13), Hudson got 19 and Cronje 33 and SA were 78 for 4. The young
- debutant Cullinan played a very controlled and secure innings but
- let the blood rush to his head on 48 and was caught off Raju trying
- to lift the spinner over mid-wicket. A pity, but a very valuable innings.
- Jonty Rhodes scratched around, was dropped twice (very sharp chances),
- popped the spinners up and into all sorts of gaps, but showed great
- character to play his own unique range of hybrid shots and was still there
- at the end of the day with 62. With him was all-rounder Brian McMillan
- on 4, and the total on 189 for 5.
-
- SA dropped one of the fast bowlers from the PE test (Schultz) in favour
- of new-boy (batsman) Cullinan, so they bat right down to number 9 and
- Matthews (at 10) is a fair bat too. The Indians attacked the whole day
- and the spinners dominated the overs and the proceedings of the day.
-
- Indian fielding is definitely not up to the (admittedly high) standard
- of the South Africans.
-
- Tomorrow looks like it will be another fascinating one with the chances
- of seeing what Alan Donald & Co will make of the wicket. This track does
- tend to get slower and slower by the day. It remains to unfold tomorrow.
-
- Stay well
