-
- Absolutely no doubt that the batsmen "performed" pathetically in this test. All
- except Azhar in the first innings and Kapil in the second. The reason I am
- remidning folks about Azhar's batting is that everyone seems to forget that he
- *has* been batting better than the likes of Manjrekar, Raman and Shastri. Azhar
- has been taking a while to get into his stride, but once he does get into form,
- there's no doubt about his credentials. Ask the Aussies.
-
- Sachin got a century in the first test, didn't he? A couple of his dismissals
- have been pretty bad breaks for him. This is not an attempt to find excuses,
- I'm just quoting facts(?). Kapil cannot be expected to make a century everytime
- he comes in to bat, he is just not the type. That leaves Amre, Prabhakar, More
- and the tailenders. Srinath, Kumble and Raju have reasonably accredited
- themselves whenever they have been to the crease. I would not expect too much
- more, though perhaps a little more, like a half-century from each one. :--)
-
- Amre is due for a good score soon, you cannot keep a good man down for too
- long. It is time Prabhakar did a couple of Kiran More's, like a solid score or
- two. It is not enough to just demand a chance to open the innings. Give that
- demand some strength by making good scores wherever you are currently batting.
- Right?
-
- Rajesh Yadav would be a good bet purely as a batsman, IMHO. More has not been
- doing too bad(except for that dropped catch off Rhodes which helped RSA save
- the game) with the gloves, and has been better than most with the bat. So, let
- us not go overboard in demanding his axing. Yadav has been written up as a
- thrilling bat, and he did score some good runs in the seventh ODI. And in the
- couple of games he played, he had quite a few victims behind the wicket.
-
- The Indians were convinced that the Johannesburg test was in the bag until
- Bucknor declared Rhodes not out when the latter was clearly run out off
- Srinath's shy at the stumps(the score would have been like 60 for four). Rhodes
- went on to make 91. SRT and Kumble were hailed as the shining heroes of that
- test. The Indians were convinced that they were a better side, and the defeat
- in the third test must have come as a shock to them. According to the reports I
- have read, RSA was the underdog in most people's eyes, and this result is a
- surprise to them.
